Found this on a mk3 Golf for sale on FB. Listing says “needs trans mount, can still be driven”
The car of course had no rocker panels, but it does have nice seats and wheels.

Shit, that’s bad. Where was it located? I love those seats and wheels. And I could use a strut tower brace...

A long time ago, a coworker had a Pontiac with rust in a similar spot (but nowhere near that bad in my memory ). She hit a curbed meridian in the snow, and drove the suspension right through the hood.

yeah, for the right price this is a good collection of parts that could be scrapped soon after.

P
rops to the seller for taking a clear
pic of the strut tower and not trying to hide it.

The thought of someone driving this is frightening, and makes me think annual inspections are a good idea.
Part it out- should be able to get $ 700 worth that way ( better yet, $ 400).

I’d say that is still salvageable, but it probably should be repaired sooner than later.
Remove anything that could be damaged by heat, cut out the rust, sand off the paint to get some clean metal, put on some weld thru primer, and weld in some thicker gauge sheet metal over the entire tower. That should last as long as the engine if it’s properly prepped and welded.

Why not just make a patch and rivet it on?

I’d only trust pop rivets to help keep more snow/slush/salt out of the existing hole, not to bear the weight of the suspension. (And I’d still suggest some sort of silicone or other sealant to ensure a seal.) Considering that there is already a sizable hole there, I wouldn’t trust a riveted on patch to prevent the hole from getting larger, the chemical reaction has already started.
Welding makes it an integral part of the existing structure in addition to covering up the hole. Be sure to hit it with some rust prevention primer and some paint too, to slow it down from happening again.

Sorry, my sarcasm meter is all screwed up.
But you made me wonder if I’m a bit spoiled by owning a decent quality wire welder ... “Just weld it” is an easy and cheap suggestion for me to make.
